This 1914 craftsman house has oodles of period charm from the early 1900s, in both a charming and not-so-charming manner. The main story is where most of the 1900s charm lies, with the basement lacking the same personality. The clients had a dream for a basement that would turn a forgotten, tight and boxed off floor plan into a more modern and livable story for their growing family. The clients set a clear constraint from the beginning — the budget would remain low; they preferred the least amount of changes to walls, plumbing, etc as possible, while also achieving the goal of a more open and captivating living space.
The plan was to demo the existing mechanical room to achieve an open concept living room, incorporate a primary bedroom suite and provide the utilities and space for housing a future baby. The project is currently under construction and as typical with 1900s craftsman homes in this area, the demolition has uncovered surprises at every turn. The clients are extra thankful to have embarked on this remodel journey to be able to discover some key structural issues in their house and our work continues into the construction (and rebuilding phase) to bring them the safe and modern 2-story home they envisioned.
