The Encino homeowners  had been pondering a backyard renovation for several years — one that would give them more intentional entertainment space for their family. Living on a steep hill with little programmed backyard outdoor space, they envisioned a larger yard space with a covered eating and entertainment zone, as well as a useful open  lawn for activities. To do so would require a hefty engineering project to extend a cantilevered lawn space into the steep hillside. After originally approaching Elevated Entitlements for initial ideas of how to expand their backyard, the clients had Tilt tackle the design  challenge of achieving all of the desired programmatic and stylistic needs of this expanded space, while maintaining the view of the valley and original less-than-ideal pool location.

Working through multiple iterations with the clients, both in style and layout, the team chose to incorporate a modern, yet warm wood structure that would stand distinct, yet in tune with the transitional style main house. An L-shaped entertainment zone around the pool brings the focus of the yard to the fun zone, the pool! The once awkwardly diagonally placed pool has now been embraced by the cabana, pergola and lounge area, all framing an open view to the valley. The L-shaped entertainment zone is complete with a full-sun lounging area adjacent to the pool and head-on to the view. The main house's view is unobstructed directly on, and the main lawn space is open for sports activities, a fire pit, etc.
